It is folly to debate the screenplay of Jai Gangaajal. It's as obvious as the Ganga in India! For all its length, Jai Gangaajal has very little to offer. It's a movie whose aim was to sell a lot of cinema tickets and the filmmakers feel content with this. It is a film bereft of logic and a testimony to how we have become more narrow minded in our thinking. When you find it difficult or even impossible to make a film coherent on any level when you've the world's greatest actress as the face of the film, there's nothing left to say about it. If the cost of the film as a result was the loss of an opportunity to make some intelligent points about India's own problems, well this that is a price worth paying.
Jai Gangaajal has all the elements of a crowd-puller, but it lacks the guts to market itself and the courage to risk the backlash of being ahead of the curve. Perhaps, Mr Jha would have hoped to cash in on the maximum public sympathy before the elections. But instead, has managed to jinx himself, creating one more example of how we continue to have a sadistic Indian cinema. It is a fatal combo and Jai Gangaajal is no match for it.
Jai Gangaajal is about the plight of the masses. Or at least a character who is symbolically a representative of them. However, in order to talk about the plight of the masses, we need to talk about a common narrative. We need to see a community being pitted against another. This is something the film fails miserably to achieve. Jai Gangaajal's over-the-top stunts, lifeless dialogues and confusing storytelling prevents it from becoming an interesting watch.
Jai Gangaajal is frustrating because it is not trying to do anything new or novel. It is merely trotting out the tried and tested concept of India being apathetic towards development. Even the strong female lead finds little room to showcase her immense acting skills.
The film works best when there is no pretense. For example, the scenes where Priyanka is shown smoking or Ranveer doing some action kung fu stuff. The movie is suffering from the real world syndrome. Maybe Jai Gangaajal would have been better had it gotten Nobel recognition! d2c66b5586
